Epidural steroid injections are a valuable tool in managing chronic pain, particularly back pain and leg pain caused by conditions such as sciatica or herniated discs. An ESI involves the injection of corticosteroid medication into the epidural space of the spine. The epidural space is the area surrounding the spinal cord and the nerves coming out of it.
Injected corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory properties. By injecting them into the epidural space, inflammation around the spinal nerves can be reduced, thereby alleviating pain. The injection may also provide pain relief by directly affecting the nerves. At Hudson, ESIs are administered with fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance so providers can see the epidural space for precise injections.
